This brief begins with historical information about content standards for English language learners who attend English as a second language (ESL) courses to improve their oral and written skills in English. It describes the processes that adult ESL teachers and program administrators can follow to successfully incorporate standards into lesson planning, classroom activities, performance assessment, and professional development. References are included.
