Curriculet: Reading Resources, "I Have a Dream"

Details

Activity Description

According to the Web site, "A curriculet is a digital layer of questions, quizzes and rich media, placed on top of any text. As students read a text, questions, quizzes, and annotations (i.e. material that would normally be placed in worksheets) pop out of the text, so students are instructed and assessed as they read… at just the right moment." There is no longer a free account.

For this activity, students read, then listen to Martin Luther King's speech, "I Have a Dream". As they read, they answer embedded questions and write about the text.

Preparation

  1. Get an account at Curriculet.
  2. Watch the Getting Started on Curriculet video that opens when you get a teacher's account. It will give you a general idea of how it works.
  3. Read through the help section.
  4. Go to Store on the menu bar, select Free Titles. You can select a title of your choice.
  5. Hover over your name on the tool bar to access Class Manager. Create a class.
  6. Give your students the token or URL and help them enroll in the class.

How-To

  1. Discuss Martin Luther King and race relationships in the United States today.
  2. Go to the text at Curriculet and demonstrate how to move around the text.
  3. As a class, read the speech. Then listen to the speech (link at end of text)
  4. Assign student groups (mix the reading levels so all can participate) to read the text and answer the questions.
  5. One of the strengths of Curriculet is you can add your own questions to the reading material.

Teacher Tips

Work with curriculet before using it with the class. If you have favorite reading material you can add it to your library. To have intermediate or beginning level readers participate, mix the reading groups.
