AI Literacy, " Be the BOT"

This lesson follows the reading lesson Dolores Huerta.

Review the reading and have students tell you what they know about Dolores Huerta.d

Today you are going to compete with AI. You are going to use your brain to analyze a text and then see if AI matches your responses.

Present the question types that they will be answering: Make sure the students understand the questions.  Do the first question together. Have the students read the question and decide on a class answer. If you want to distribute the questions to the class, you can find the page here.

Next type the answer into your favorite generative AI program-Chatgpt, Gemini or Claude to name three of the most popular. 

See how AI's answer compares and discuss if anything is missing or inaccurate? Did AI respond the way we predicted? What information did the AI use to respond? Did it use only the reading? etc.

Divide students into groups to answer the questions using the reading. You can have them do one question at a time or all the questions. It is really up to you how you want to approach this.

Have students evaluate the answers that AI gave them: Below are some of the types of questions you can ask the students. See if students can discern which answers the bot gave came from the reading and which answers did not. 

Questions to ask:

Are the respones any good? How do we know if they are good or bad? How do we define good or bad in this context?

Is there anything missing or inaccurate? Are there any perspectives missing? Did the AI assistant's persepctive lean in a certain direction? Was it biased? If not, what would it look like if it were biased? How do we know when it is biased?

What was the format of the response? If it's a list, do you thinkit is a ranked list? Did we ask it to rank the list?

Did the AI assistant respond the way we predicted? How did we know to predict that response? What was unexpected?

Have students write a short summary of the types what they learned about AI use from this activity. Here is a link to the writing activity

The Comparison: How did your group's answer differ from the AI’s response? Did the AI miss a specific detail, emotion, or cultural context that you included?
The Evaluation: In this specific case, who provided the "better" answer—the Human or the Bot? Why? (Think about accuracy, depth, and "heart").
The Conclusion: Based on this activity, what is one thing a human brain can do that an AI still struggles to do?

To compare: "While the AI focused primarily on [X], our group prioritized [Y] because..."
To evaluate: "The AI’s response felt [robotic/generic/accurate] because it lacked..."
To conclude: "Ultimately, the 'Human Edge' in this lesson was our ability to understand [emotion/nuance/history] in a way the bot could not."
