Using Social Media to Get the Word Out

Screenshot of OTAN Twitter postDuring Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, many adult education agencies in California and across the country are sharing information, resources, and success stories via social media. Social media is a powerful tool to connect with your students, community members, political representatives, journalists, and local organizations. If your agency is not using social media yet, perhaps this is a good week to kick off your presence on one or more social media sites.

There are some great resources to help you get started with social media. Included on the Proactive Outreach Webpage of the California Adult Education website are the following (scroll to the bottom of the page for the links):

  • Harnessing the Power of Social Media for Adult Education – This webinar recording highlights key Twitter and Facebook strategies to showcase success stories, important data points, infographics, and calls to action to motivate engagement with your adult education programs. Learn how to build your following to maximize reach and exposure.
  • Using Social Media to Market Adult Education – In this webinar recording, learn about the purpose, value, and features of popular social media tools, see examples of social media use in adult education, learn about strategies for managing social media marketing, as well as additional resources available.

There is also a very informative article, Use Social Media to Market Your Private School, that explains in a clear way how any school, public or private, can use Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram to connect with current and prospective students and the larger community. The article details a number of steps for each social media platform that will help you get started using the tool and make using the tool manageable for beginners.

Social media is where are students and supporters are in the 21st century, so if your adult ed agency is not on social media, consider getting started this week to begin and continue promoting your agency after AEFL Week is over.
