While many people fear that A.I. “undermines the quality of education and allows students to cheat their way through assignments,” this technology, if used correctly, can also enhance many learning experiences. A.I. can assist language teachers with ideas about simulating conversations, role playing, and creating interactive stories. This article summarizes three additional ways AI can benefit the ESL student.

  1. Creating Interactive Language Practice Sessions with the Right ChatGPT Prompting

Some of the ideas from the article suggest using AI for Conversation starters or for Situational dialogues to stand-in for a particular person like an interviewer or waiter. Another way for AI to assist is to generate Grammar practice to help “students correct errors or use different structures.”

Example prompt: "Generate 10 sentences. Each sentence needs to contain a grammar mistake related to: Present Perfect and Past Simple, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement. Explain what the mistakes are."

  2. Developing Customized Learning Materials with ChatGPT

ChatGPT “is fantastic for creating personalized learning materials.” It can generate “worksheets, quizzes, and lesson plans.” Other ideas include Vocabulary building, for specialized terms, Reading comprehension to generate articles at different reading levels with corresponding questions, and Listening practice “to write scripts for mock podcasts.”

  3. Encouraging Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

A teacher can ask ChatGPT to “provide information on a topic, and then ask students to assess its credibility.” A few other examples suggested are Debate preparation where a topic can be generated with various viewpoints for the student to read and critique. Another one is Project-based learning where a scenario and task can be composed to complete in English. Lastly, Chat GPT can support Analyzing information where a variety of AI-generated texts are created for students to “assess accuracy and bias.”
