Canvas Sessions / Series

Description

Canvas is a web-based Learning Management System that has both a free and subscription service. Canvas allows teachers to post assignments, schedules, enroll students, and post grades using a variety of customizable course creation and management tools.

Note: Workshop sessions require that registered participants have either a free Canvas account or a district subscription BEFORE a workshop session.

Current titles and short descriptions include but are not limited to:

Advanced ESL Course on Canvas - with the move to the use of Instructure Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) across the state, the course was updated and redesigned as a fully shared Canvas course. The 18-unit course is topic based and covers multiple language proficiency skills. The course is available by OTAN at no cost to California adult education agencies.

Canvas Bootcamp an intensive in-person session where 3 hours is required. The bootcamp covers Canvas basics, layout, pages, adding courses and content including embeds from outside sources, use of Canvas Commons, and instructional best practices with the Canvas LMS. A Bootcamp can precede or follow the Basics, Intermediate, or Canvas Commons sessions but is recommended as a standalone session that includes topics from the entire Canvas series.

Canvas Commons: a repository that enables educators to find, import, and share resources within the Canvas learning management system (LMS), this session includes the process of importing free courses and modules from Commons into Canvas accounts was well as how to customize and then share the course with students.

Canvas: Basics: explores the free version of Canvas to show educators how to create a course, add and organize materials, create assignments and customize their online classes. Tools and apps allowed within Canvas will also be explored and other topics as time allows.

Canvas: Intermediate - Organize and Engage: focuses on designing Canvas courses to take advantage of tools that will streamline workflow, explore finer details of course module creation, utilizing the free resources available within the Canvas system, and engagement ideas to use with students.

Canvas: Advanced and Beyond: takes teachers beyond basics of Canvas and into course settings, grading, and other topics as requested.

Canvas Mini-Sessions: Mini-sessions are “in the moment” learning session with a facilitator demonstrating Canvas after which the rest of the time is spent putting the “mini-moment” into practice by attendees.

PREREQUISITES:

All attendees or participants

• should have basic computer skills, and a valid email address, and
• must be able to sign in and access a free or subscription Canvas account before the session.

OTAN Certificates of Attendance are awarded only for workshop sessions to those that are pre-registered and attend at least 75% of the scheduled time.
