TDLS 2023 - Establishing Blended Learning in the Correctional Environment

TDLS

Correctional education has evolved from a singularly face-to-face model to one recognizing the need for digital literacy supporting the success of learners in their post-incarceration lives. This session will discuss the work performed in creating blended learning opportunities in correctional education using integrated in-class technology and individual student devices adapted to meet the unique needs of correctional institutions. Implementation and use of Learning Management Systems, interactive media, online educational materials, and other approaches to supplementing instruction in housing units and common areas will be discussed, as will the challenges of conforming to safety and security needs. Specific focus on differentiating blended learning for Adult Basic Education, Career Technical Education, and Postsecondary Education learners will be presented based on the lessons learned in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation blended learning initiative.
