TDLS 2022 - HyFlex Model: Recommendations for Student Access & Success

TDLS

We are the ESL Technology Coordinator and Digital Literacy Coordinator from the San Diego College of Continuing Education presenting on the HyFlex model that we piloted and implemented in over 35 courses Fall 2021. HyFlex (hybrid + flexibility) course design provides a hybrid format for campus-based and online students while adding a flexible participation policy. Students may choose to attend face-to-face synchronous class sessions or complete course learning activities online without attending class in person. With a review of the literature, pilot testing, and several professional development training sessions for our Instructional Assistants and Faculty, we have had an overall successful first semester of HyFlex course offerings. In this presentation, we plan to share how we navigate the challenges of adopting HyFlex technology, providing instructional and technical support, implementing course design, and teaching to both campus-based and online students.
