Abstract:
This is a report of the findings of the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) which measured the English literacy of American adults (people age 16 and older living in households or prisons). The 2003 NAAL builds on the previous national assessment completed in 1992, and defines literacy as "using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential". Results are reported in terms of scale score averages and literacy levels on three literacy scales: prose, document, and quantitative. Sample assessment questions are included in the report.
