Abstract:
Family and intergenerational literacy programs combine adult basic skill improvement and literacy development in children. This report is an overview of practice in the field. The first chapter presents general background information including definitions and purposes. The second chapter describes the research base. Chapter 3 details programs in adult basic education, libraries, family English literacy, preschool and elementary education, and corporate programs. The fourth chapter presents a typography for classification in mode of intervention and target population. The four generic program types presented are direct adults-direct children, indirect adults-indirect children, direct adults-indirect children, and indirect adults-direct children.
