Explores issues in adult literacy education in the United States. Included are the question of definition, the diverse array of literacy service providers, the goals of literacy instruction, types of literacy programs, access and equity, desired learner outcomes and approaches to achieve them, evaluation and assessment, and professionalization of the field. References are included.
