This Web site is filled with tools to assist teachers as they set up their math course as well as students looking for individual help. The site includes class notes, video worksheets, video lectures (using different formats if you cannot access YouTube), homework sets, topic quizzes to assess if students are able to skip the topic, and much more.

This is the Algebra2go Prealgebra course from Saddleback College with all lesson and class resources available for immediate download in one large zip file (1.14GB).

Preparation

Preview the site. Read the information on the home page to familiarize yourself with the site. Then select a course/topic in the left side navigation menu. Then you will see the Class Notes, Video Worksheets, Video formats, Homework sets and Topic Quizzes that are available.
Preview the video
If you plan on group activities after the class watches the video, print the homework set for your topic choice.
Print copies of answer keys (found at the end of some of the homework sets, also problem answers are available in the class notes).
Have an answer key to the Homework set available if you want students to correct their own work.

How-To

Introduce the math topic. You can use your textbook or the Class Notes from the Web site.
Allow students to watch the video on the topic. Stop the video to allow students to work on problems.
Lead a discussion on how to do each problem.
Hand out the Homework Set. Have students work in groups. Go over any problems they have trouble with. Show the answer key.
Demonstrate how to use the Topic Quizzes as an assessment tool to see if the students understand the topic and are prepared for a quiz that you will create, such as the one in the Example Document titled Fractions Quiz with answers (above).

Teacher Tips

Students enjoy the videos.
If students have trouble taking notes on the videos print a copy of the Video Worksheet, which includes the problems presented on the video.
Have groups work separately on Homework Sets. Have them assist in creating the answer key.
When the groups do not agree on the answers, do them together. This works well between classes as well. When one class differs on an answer write SmackDown! beside the correct answer so they see their work showcased.

Explore other courses offered on the left side menu. Beginning Algebra is not yet finished (missing homework sets and topic quizzes), but there are wonderful Class Notes and Videos to aid in understanding Algebra.
Math assistance in Allied Health, Computer Science, and Chemistry Prep are found under Modules on the left. The study guides are well written and worth printing for student use.

We use math everyday. What are some ways we use math? Students turn to their neighbors and discuss ways they use math.

Introduction

Gather as a whole group and let students share their ideas from their paired discussions. Today we are going to examine how we use math when we renovate our house or backyard. We are going to compute perimeter for figuring out the cost of a fence. Perimeter is the measure around something. You can do it by measuring each side and then adding them together. You could also use the same technique for figuring out the perimeter of a picture frame. Where else might we need to figure out perimeter? Students turn to each other to discuss and then share with the class.

First go to a website that will help us review our math skills, Algebra2Go. On the left side, select Prealgebra. Scroll down the center. You can demonstrate the various learning tools avaialable or you can go down to the section beginning with Addition and Subtraction. Go across the screen and open the various resources including Class Notes in English and Spanish, Video Worksheets, Video in three formats, Hoemwork Sets, and Topics Quizzes.

Point out that if students are unsure where to start reviewing in math, they can begin with the topic quiz. It is six questions. If they get them correct, then move to the next topic.

For today's discussion about perimieter open the class notes beside Finding Perimeter. Go to page 4 of the Addition and Perimenter handout.

Students turn to their partner and go thorugh apage 4 of the handout.

Prior to class print the worksheet for the video, or project the problems on the board.Watch the video, Finding Perimeter

Stop the video and allow the students to work on the problems in pairs. Go over the problems together.

Students can work on the Homework Sets in pairs. They can access the worksheet online or you can print them and hand them out. The worksheet has the answer sheet included.

Have a student pair go to the board together. One writes while the other explains how to do the problem. Discuss the procedure and answers with the class.

For a formative assessment have students access the Finding Perimeter Topic Quiz. With all students working at the same time, go through problem set 1, calling on students to answer each of the six questions.. There are three problem sets you can review with the students.

Application

Engagement Extension

Students can discuss ways to use perimeter and bring 'problems' from their own homes. They might take a picture of a flower garden and bring the dimenstions for the students to practice using perimeter to find the dimensions.
