Treat yourself to Twee’s Free AI Tools
By Kristi Reyes, Subject Matter Expert, OTAN
Adult educators who are early adopters have embraced the power of generative AI tools to create customized lesson materials, differentiate instruction, and save time. Using Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and others effectively requires an understanding of how to prompt the tools, but sometimes the output just does not give us what we are hoping for.
Susan Gaer and Kristi Reyes, OTAN Subject Matter Experts, recently published their Digital Promise's Adult Learner Variability Navigator Resource Review of ALVN in the Adult Literacy Education Journal – Volume 6 Issue 2, Summer 2024. This article’s intention is to acquaint readers with key findings.

Message from the Director
I’m hoping that many of you were able to take part in the annual California Adult Education Program (CAEP) Summit October 28-30. There were more than 500 in-person attendees and even more participating remotely as part of the first ever hybrid CAEP Summit. It’s truly the place to be to meet your job-like colleagues and to stay abreast of the latest research and practice in adult education. I’m a huge fan of the Summit, but what I find most inspirational about the event is the celebration of the Students Succeed honorees. The students’ stories never fail to root me once again in my “why”. This year 16 new honorees representing 7 agencies were added to our OTAN database that currently captures 332 of the personal stories of these inspirational and resilient individuals we are fortunate enough to call our adult education students.
Each year, OTAN recognizes the four top-scoring students by inviting them to attend either the CAEP Summit or the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Leadership Conference and by creating a video of their stories. All nominees meeting the minimum rubric requirements are invited to have their written personal stories published on the OTAN Students Succeed website. External Link Icon opens in new window or tab This year’s top honorees, who were in person at the Summit, overcame significant life and educational hurdles to reach their goals.
Every year, agencies are asked to participate in Adult Education Leg Day. And there is no better way to demonstrate the impact of Adult Ed than through our students and their experiences. This year, consider which students your agency can nominate and celebrate for their perseverance and grit. Take time to capture the stories of your students and let OTAN help celebrate them with you. The Student Succeed nomination External Link Icon opens in new window or tab period will be open from January 1 through March 21, but the rubric External Link Icon opens in new window or tab is available for you to get started right away. I look forward to reading about each of your amazing students!
