TDLS 2023 - Liquid Syllabus: Key to an Equitable Accessible and Inclusive Course

TDLS

Creating an equitable and accessible syllabus is essential to promoting an inclusive course. Teaching in person, hybrid, synchronous or asynchronous, the syllabus is often one of the first documents reviewed in courses, but many times the tone can be overly formal instead of caring and learner-centered. It is crucial that attitudes of inclusion and empathy are clearly communicated through the syllabus, and that students are provided with the tools they need to succeed in the course. Using various techniques gained from the @ONE course “Equity and Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning” and other resources, the presenters will guide the audience through a comprehensive look at why equitable and culturally responsive teaching is necessary, and how to take steps towards creating an equity -minded syllabus. The facilitators will demonstrate practical ways of transforming syllabi into equitable tools that foster diversity, accessibility, warmth, and inclusion.
